Gold may glitter, but some see pizzazz in platinum. Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) which is 80%-owned by natural resources giant Anglo American, is the world's largest miner of platinum group metals, or PGMs, such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. The company produces around 2.4 million ounces of platinum and about 1.4 million ounces of palladium annually. Its reserves include about 879 million ounces comprising platinum, palladium, rhodium, and gold. PGMs are used in catalytic converters, electronics, fuel cells, industrial processes (as catalysts), and jewelry. Amplats operates the Unki Mine in Zimbabwe, explores in Brazil through joint-ventures, and also has exploration activities in Russia.
